Colorado Supreme Court Announces Opinion in In Re Marriage of Brandt

On January 23, 2012, the Colorado Supreme Court announced its opinion in IRM Brandt. Firm attorneys Stanley Lipkin and Trish Cooper represented Respondent in the appeal and were successful in overturning the District Court’s order assuming jurisdiction to modify a Maryland custody order.

How to Be a Great Divorce Client

Why bother being a great client? After all, you're paying the attorney. But doing your job well as the client can save you money and get better results. What do you need to do?

Be Accurate and Complete

You'll be giving your attorney lots of information on family history, finances and child issues. Put the effort into making that information as clear, accurate and complete as you possibly can. Avoid errors and corrections will save a lot of attorney time and avoid embarassing gotchas from the other side.

Ask Questions

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. You need to understand the process and options in order to make good decisions about your future. Different clients have different backgrounds and training and your attorney won't always know what you don't know. If in doubt, ask.

If You Can't be Good, Be Discreet

Contrary to all expectation, divorce is not the ideal mechanism to vent all your frustrations at you ex's deplorable character flaws. In fact, the more mud you sling, the more the unreasonable behavior will escalate. You don't have to like your ex, but you don't have to tell them what you think of them either.

Be Responsive

Your lawyer will need to meet lots of court imposed deadlines as well as responding to requests and inquiries from the other side. Responding to these requests can feel like a real burden. The sooner you can provide the information, the more time your attorney has to make sure that it presents you in the best light. Leaving things to the last minute and beyond will not lead to good results.

Credit Suisse Chief Penalized $750,000 in Divorce Case

The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled that Brady Dougan, the chief executive of Credit Suisse, owed his ex-wife more than $750,000 in interest for missing a 2006 divorce settlement payment by 12 days. Of course, Mr. Dougan had been earning a gross weekly income of $384,615, and held more than $77 million in assets, so we won't be feeling too sorry for him.

Paul McCartney targeted by phone hackers in divorce

In more fallout from the News Of The World scandal, Paul McCartney was allegedly targeted by phone hackers during his ivorce from Heather Mills. Mills, who was granted a £25m divorce settlement at the High Court in 2006, is also said to have been a victim of hacking. The model is considering suing the News of the World for breach of privacy over alleged phone hacking, along with her sister Fiona.

New Ontario divorce rules aim to avoid courts
